Recycling was among
the earliest efforts of Tree Musketeers as another way to
save trees and other natural resources. Public education flyers
and letters to the editor of the El Segundo Herald began demanding
curbside recycling in 1988, and the paper dedicated Conservation
Station column space for the public education campaign of
Tree Musketeers.
In 1990, we opened the
first recycling drop-off center in town. We chaired a citizen's
committee in 1991 to develop the city's waste management plan,
but still no curbside!
In 1996, 5th graders
in a Tree Musketeers LEAD program took up the cause again.
The youth successfully designed and gained City approval for
an optional curbside recycling service. The result was the
launch of California's first subscription-based curbside recycling
program in 1997. It was done by kids, of course, with a lot
of help from our friends at Consolidated Disposal Services!
With continued public
education, the program grew and awareness increased. On May
1, 2001, a very supportive City Council finally approved citywide
curbside recycling! Tree Musketeers is pleased to be a partner
with Consolidated Services in offering El Segundo's program!
We will perform the community education element as we have
for the past 14 years!
Curbside Recycling
The City of El Segundo, Tree Musketeers and Consolidated Disposal
Services, LLC are proud to announce free citywide curbside
recycling!
Service is FREE to all
single-family homes and multi-family buildings with 4 or fewer
units. Dwellers of larger complexes still have the option
of enrolling in the subscription program through Tree Musketeers.

Recycling will be collected
once a week on the same day and from place as your garbage
pick-up. Consolidated provides you with an 18-gallon bin for
co-mingled glass, plastic, and metal materials. Paper and
cardboard products can be bundled or packed in paper grocery
bags and left beside the bin.
Why Participate?
No more trips to the recycling center or messy garage storage
of recyclables!
It's the right thing to do-environmental education begins
at home; fewer natural resources go to the landfill; and recycling
conserves energy!
It is a contribution to charity! Part of the money from CRV
beverage containers collected will be invested in the youth
leadership and environmental programs of Tree Musketeers!

Dropoff Recycling
The dropoff center is available for residents and small businesses
24 hours every day at 150 Illinois St. You may recycle the
same items that are accepted in the curbside program which
are separated the same way- one bin for paper products and
one for all containers. To prevent messy overflow, please
remember to flatten cardboard and paperboard. When using plastic
bags to transport recyclables, empty the contents into the
bin and put the bags in the trash.
Greenwaste
Yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings, and tree trimmings
can also be deposited in a designated area in the dropoff
center at 150 Illinois St.. Instead of becoming trash destined
for the landfill, it is chipped into mulch.
Mulch is free for the taking at the dropoff center. All you
have to do is bring a bucket. Mulch is a magic ingredient
for successful home gardens. It nourishes the soil, reduces
erosion and runoff by increasing absorbency, deters weed growth,
and conserves water.
Christmas Trees are picked up for mulching on trash day during
the two weeks following Christmas.
Reuseables
Reuseable items that are left at the dropoff center end up
in the trash when they could have done a whole lot of good
if given to a charity. If you have clothing, household goods,
appliances, furniture and the like that can be repaired and
reused, the following are only two of numerous reuse industries
that will pick these items up from you:
- The Gospel Army 213/752-2084
- Dorothy Brown School
800/850-5182
Construction
Debris
Construction debris, used tires and the like may not be deposited
with household trash for weekly collection, or left at the
dropoff center. It is about the only solid waste that must
be transported out of town to a transfer station where materials
that are reuseable or recyclable are reclaimed before the
rest is landfilled. Our nearest transfer station is:
American Waste Transfer
1449 West Rosecrans Avenue
Gardena, CA 90249

Household Hazardous Waste
Motor oil, paint, pesticides, disposable batteries, pool chemicals,
etc. are household hazardous waste. It is best to reduce toxins
in the wastestream by choosing alternative products, and to
use them up once you have them. These items must be carefully
disposed of separately from waste that goes into your trash
and the landfill. The County of Los Angeles offers free household
hazardous waste roundups weekly. Use this link to check for
upcoming dates and locations.
