America's Great Outdoors Youth Listening Session |
July 8, 2010, Los Angeles, CA -- President Obama invited environmentally-minded youth from Los Angeles to participate in his America's Great Outdoors Youth Listening Session. Tree Musketeers Youth Director Adam Gerard attended the event, where he participated in a round-table discussion and was selected to present suggestions to a panel of distinguished government officials, including Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. The suggestions presented at the session will be used to develop a conservation and recreation agenda for the 21st century. Youth Director Adam Gerard also had the honor of meeting personally with Secretary Salazar and sharing information about Tree Musketeers!
"It was an honor to participate in this event," said Adam. "To have the President and high-level government officials asking youth for their advice and ideas, it shows how great our impact truly is. I was so glad Tree Musketeers was invited to be a part of the conversation about the future of the environment." |

The First Annual Tree Hugger Day |
|
October 17, 2009, El Segundo, CA -- In partnership with American Forests and Ikea, Tree Musketeers helped present the first annual National Tree Hugger. Our youth leaders hosted the only National Tree Hugger Day west of Chicago and the only "by kids" event nationwide. Although fewer than 100 locals showed up on National Tree Hugger Day, the celebration did not lack for spirit. Activities included tree care, a group "Tree Hug" photo, a "heart-felt gratitude" ritual expressing appreciation for trees and the people who care for them, and a picnic with games for the kids. |
 |
| "This was our first National Tree Hugger Day event," says Gail Church, executive director of Tree Musketeers, "and we're looking forward to growing it into an annual celebration which honors the environment and the local volunteers who work so hard to preserve and protect it. In reality, every person should consider him or herself a "tree hugger" because without trees and other plants, human beings wouldn't be able to survive." |

The Amazing Waving Human Tide Line |
October, 24, 2009, Manhattan Beach, CA -- Tree Musketeers joined with others across the globe to form "The Amazing Waving Human Tide Line" on the beach beginning at the Manhattan Beach Pier. More than 3,700 events in over 160 countries took part in the International Day of Climate Action, formed by www.350.org.
The 350 refers to the scientific belief that reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million will prevent catastrophic and irreversible climate change. According to 350.org, the current level in the atmosphere is 387 parts per million. In different ways, the number 350 was formed by people around the world and photographed. Organizers hoped these photos would give world leaders an incentive to pass a climate treaty at the United Nation's Copenhagen climate conference late last year. The human tide line was designed to show how far some think the sea level could rise in California if nothing is done about climate change.
The goal of the event was to raise awareness around climate change and to demonstrate it in an easily understandable way. Tree Musketeers was represented by youth director Adam Gerard in the South Bay 350 Climate Action Group comprising many environmental and other nonprofits plus cities. |
